Phylicia Barnes And Chanel Petro-Nixon Were Good Kids: There Is An Urgency To Protect Our Children

A New York sanitation crew was making it’s routine garbage pickups in a section of Brooklyn June 18, 2006, when one crew member encountered an usually heavy load of garbage that also gave off an extremely foul odor.  The Cops were summoned and they discovered a body of  a young female. The gruesome corpse was later determined to be the remains of young teen Honer Student Chanel Petro-Nixon, left on a busy street corner to rot like common Trash.  Her story unfortunately never achieved National Media attention, like that of Phylicia Barnes. Later on America’s Most Wanted Investigative Reporter, John Lieberman and then, the Rev. Al Sharpton took up the pretty little girl’s murder story to warm up an otherwise cold case. However, their efforts only gained local attention. This past June marked the 5th anniversary of the Nixon child’s death, and no one has ever been charged in connection with her killing. Chanel’s body, just like Phylicia Barnes’ who was found nude floating in a river, as if the girls lives were worthless, produces anger and outrage. Baring the intricate details related to their individual killings, we seem to find very little contrast in the character and development of these children. They were both from very structured homes, were among the top of their perspective classes academically, very attractive, and had never been in any kind of serious trouble prior to the tragedy that ended their lives. In murder cases it’s always a challenge to get individuals who may have knowledge about the case to come forward, do the right thing, and bring justice to the victims and their families. It’s troubling that two of our most educated children have been taken and the cowards responsible remain at large. The African American Community suffers from a serious decease that promotes silence in the face of  evil. An evilness that could ultimately impact one of their very own children. Yet we remain apathetically resolved to say nothing, cower in our homes, and create an arena for the very nature of evil to exist. Some offer a seemingly emphatic rationalization that they do not want to die, and I understand this but we can not fear evil especially when the safety of our children are concerned.

Phylicia Barnes (Monroe, N.C.) and Chanel Petro-Nixon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) were both 16 year old Honor Roll Students who vanished in thin air, and were later found murdered in the mean streets of Baltimore and New York. Their killers have never been found.

Our community is sweltering with violence. Most of the victims in many of these sad and tragic stories are our children. To say that I am too afraid to speak out when evilness taps at my door within my community is simply a display of irresponsibility to our children and our families.  To drive home the point that the “fear of death” mindset is nothing more than a mere rationalization used to escape personal responsibility, we can look at the reckless behavior that many adults engage in, and we see that death apparently is well below the list of priority related to personal safety. We know that the silence murder brings originates from society’s physiological trait of acceptance. We want to be popular, well liked, and the death of two studious little girls is meaningless when social acceptance is weighed. Sadly though, many of our people who profess to love God fail to act when they have information related to crime that could aid authorities in solving many of these cases. Several years ago I sat in the pews of  the New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland, as Dr. Walter Scott Thomas gave a sermon to his congregation related to Christian responsibilities. On that Sunday morning the Pastor called upon his  followers to take back their communities. Dr. Thomas highlighted his speech by asking the church, “How can a Christian say that they love God when they see drug dealers selling drugs right at their doorstep, and not pick up the phone and call the police”? I remember that sermon well, and the eerie silence that suddenly fell upon the congregation. I am not picking on Christians here, nor am I inferring that such civic responsibility falls solely on the shoulders of the followers of Christ. The point is that all of God’s People share the burden of righteousness and if for no other purpose but to defeat Satan. The killers of these children derived from the dregs of humanity, and they must be captured in the name of God and all of his people. Some where someone knows something about the deaths of these little girls and I plead with them to step forward and embrace all that is good and pure, do the right thing, and go to the police. Fear not the consequence of retribution, the terror associated with violence, the ridicule of others, and the stigma of the “stop snitching” culture. Fear no man, as their viciousness and evilness has no authority related to the destination of your soul. People would have to literally kill me, to stop me from speaking the truth, stop me from turning them in, and claiming victory in he name of God. It is clearly stated in the Holy Quran that, “Blessed is the Martyr who dies for the cause of righteousness and God. Bliss is his for all eternity”. I can’t stop thinking about a little girl named Chanel who simply wanted to find a job and hang out with her friends, or a little girl named Phylicia who just wanted to love somebody, and get to know her family. I can not image the details or the events that occurred during their final hour with us. Will you help us? Will you aid in seeking justice for our daughters? Will you claim victory in the name of God and all of our people?

I don’t understand why these killers are not brought to justice yet! They are not that clever to commit the perfect crme, who’s protecting them? I say we call Medical Examiner Michael Baden and First 48 to solve these crimes because evidently it’s a cover up somewhere…

  2. Harry watson says:

Thank you David for this front line story. My God bless you and your family for your efforts to help our communities confront this nationwide crisis.I will do my part by caring and speaking up and will continue to ask others to do the same.I feel we can make a differance.

    • Janice M. Sallis-Mustafa says:

WOULDN’T UR PART IS TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND TURN IN SOME OF UR FAMILY MEMBERS AND WHAT ABOUT UR DAUGHTER WHO WERE ALSO A PART OF THE PARTY THE NIGHT BEFORE. LET’S BE REAL ABOUT THIS SERIOUS SITUATION. WHAT ARE U REALLY TRYING TO IMAGE.

      • TK says:

Oh I believe you Mrs. Mustafa because my daughter had a recent encounter with a VERY rude B more police officer. I told her “He’s lucky I wasn’t present because they seem to think all us in B more are illiterate ignorant hoodrats!!!” Mrs. Mayor you really need to teach your officers sensitivity, manners and tact. I understand they have a dangerous job but I’m hearing too many negative attitude stories!!!!

Wow Harry seems that credibility is on the line from a grieving mother who you claim has your FULL support in search of the TRUTH???? I know I know I wouldn’t want to believe a child I brought into this world would be part of something (a cover up) so horrible after all my long FB speeches and pleas for justice but remember I warned of that bitter pill you and others in the fam might have to swallow………

      • Harry watson says:

JANICE I STILL CANNOT BELEIVE YOU ARE TELL AMERICA THAT MY TWO DAUGHTER,ONE WHO SPENT TWO TOURS IN IRAQ SAVING LIVES AND IS NOW THE TOP ENLISTED SOLDIER THAT RUN A MILITARY HOSPITAL WARD THAT DEAL WITH SOLDIER INJURIED IN THESE TWO WARS WE ARE FIGHTING.WHO IS ALSO ONE OF A HANDFILL OF TOP AFRICAN AMERICAN FEMALE PROFESSIONAL ROLLER DERBY GIRLS AND SKATES ALONG SIDE HER SISTER WHO ALSO IS A PROFESSIONAL SKATER FOR THE CHARM CITY ROLLER AND HOLD A MASTERS DEGREE IN EDUCATION TEACHING AT SCHOOL OF PERFORMING ACT.AND YOU SAY THEY WERE PRESENT AT A PARTY WITH YOUR 16 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER ON A WEEKNIGHT OR ANYNIGHT AND IS PART OF A COVER UP.ALL THIS TIME I REALLY WAS OUT THINKING I WAS KEEPING PEOPLE AWARE THAT THIS FAMILY NEEDS ANSWERS AND WILL’NT QUIT UNTIL THIS IS DONE YOU WERE THINKING ME AND THE PEOPLE IN MY HOUSE WERE WORKING ON ONE OF THE BIGGEST COVER-UP IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY EVER.IT HAS TO BE THE BIGGEST BECAUSE THIS BALTIMORE HOUSE IS LITTERED WITH POSTERS,FLYERS PETITION PAPERWORK AND JUST ABOUT ANYTHING YOU NEED TO KEEP A PERSON NAME ALIVE.EVERYONE IN MY HOUSE HAS WORK VERY HARD.FROM MY 75 YEAR OLD MOTHER-IN LAW TO MY 13 YEAR OLD GRANDSON.THIS IS A MESS AND A SLAP IN THE FACE BUT WE WILL MAKE IT.DID YOU SEE ANYTHING WE DID TO TRY TO HELP PHYLICIA NAME OVER THE PASS 10 MONTHS.NOT ONE DAY PASS THAT SOMEONE DID NOT DO SOMETHING FOR JUSTICE IN THE NAME OF PHYLICIA BARNES. I CANNOT BELEIVE THIS IS REALLY YOU SAYING THAT ABOUT MY DAUGHTER AND MY CHARACTER.YOU SHOULD KNOW IF WE COULD HAVE DONE MORE WE WOULD HAVE AND YOUR DAUGHTERS KILLER WOULD BE BEHIND BARS BY NOW.MAY GOD GUIDE YOU AND CONTINUE TO HELP US FIND THE THUTH.MY NUMBER HAS NOT CHANGED.EVERYONE CAN CALL ME A FOOL BUT UNTIL PHYLICIA’S MOTHER CALL ME IN PERSON I WILL NEVER BELEIVE SHE WOULD SAY THIS ABOUT PEOPLE IN MY HOUSE. I WILL NEVER QUIT UNTIL JUSTICE IS SERVED MY METHODS DIFFER FROM OTHERS FOUND IN PLACES LIKE THIS.

    • Janice M. Sallis-Mustafa says:

HARRY I NEVER SAID THAT EIITHER OF UR DAUGHTERS WERE BEING A COVER UP. MAYBE U OUGHT TO READ THE OTHER PEOPLE’S COMMENT OR MAYBE U OUGHT TO RE-READ WHAT I REPLIED TO YOU. I KNOW HOW MUCH TIME U SPENT OUT THERE PASSING OUT FLYERS MORESO THAN UR UNCLE RUSSEL. I JUST KNOW THAT ONE OF UR DAUGHTER’S CALLED AND COMPLAINED ON ONE OF THE INVESTIGATORS BECAUSE SHE THOUGHT THAT HE WAS RUDE TO HER, AND AS A RESULT HE HAD TO PUT ON HOLD LOOKING FOR ANSWERS AND MY DAUGHTER DUE TO THE COMPLAINT THAT SHE MADE AND U SIGNED AS A WITNESS. ALSO I REMEMBER YRS BACK CONFIDING IN YOU AND ASKED YOU TO KEEP THE INFO TO URSELF AND U DID NOT AND I WAS THREATEN BY THE VERY PERSON THAT I TOLD YOU BECAUSE I THOUGHT WE WERE COOL LIKE THAT. AND ALSO I’M NOT SAYING THAT I DON’T AND/OR APPRECIATE ALL UR HARD AND EARNEST EFFORTS. IT WAS JUST STRANGE TO ME THAT U WERE THE ONLY ONE OUT OF THE BARNES FAMILY THAT I SAW PUTTING INTO TIME TO LOOK FOR MY BABY. WHAT I DID SAY THAT ONE OF THEM ATTENDED THE PARTY THE NIGHT BEFORE HER DISAPPEARANCE NOT ACCUSING HER OF ANYTHING. REMEMBER YOU STOPPED CALLING NOT ME. MY BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT IS THE DEADLY DECEIT AND BETRAYAL FROM DEENA AND HER FATHER PROTECTING HER WHEN MY BABY WAS MURDERED DURING HER CARE I GUESS I GAVE HER WAY……………. MORE CREDIT AS A DECENT HUMAN BEING THEN SHE’D DESERVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Lisa says:

Hate to break it to you, but Phylicia Barnes did make national media news many times over. (CNN, USA Today, America’s Most Wanted.)

    • dbrianadams says:

Lisa what on earth are you talking about? No one said Phylicia Barnes didn’t make National Media. You might want to re-read the Blog Post. reading is fundamental.

    • Janice M. Sallis-Mustafa says:

AND LISA UR POINT IS WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Janice M. Sallis-Mustafa says:

lisa i hate to break it to you, but what if it were ur loved one who had a tragic death and stripped of her dignity would that be the way you’d feel about my daughter’s situation and for ur sake don’t lie to urself nor get stuck in denial.. we r going to keep this reality real, how about you TRY and do the same.

  4. Carmen Sandiego says:

Harry Watson aren’t you the guy from the pray for phylicia barnes facebook page doing propaganda for the Barnes family? Tell those cowards deena and kelly to tell the truth and help bring phylicia’s case to a close! Even if ultimately it leads to their arrests as well!

    • TK says:

Harry Watson strikes me as a man that when law enforcement presents the truth it might be a bitter pill but he will swallow as well. For his own sanity if he must operate under the “innocent until proven guilty” for those close to him then I’m fine with that as well! The goal is to find the truth for Mrs. Mustafa and family. I have no sympathy for whomever rots in jail for this crime. A child is about to lose a parent and a parent is about to lose their child….RIP Angels!!!!

Nice to see all the passion in finding out who murdered this intelligent promising young lady in that apt!!!!!!

    • IT GETS WORSE & WORSE EVERYDAY says:

Well . . . it’s starting to make more sense that the investigation is taking soooo long if Harry has something to do with it and he is related to the Barnes. Fuck Deena, Russell, Kelly, bring their asses to justice, especially Deena, Phylicia is your family as well. You know Deena is guilty. Do the right thing! Turn their asses in Mr. Justice, help solve the case.

  5. Fancy says:

Wow is Right Ms. Sallis-Mustafa, what a shame for the officer to make that comment, I used to work at a funeral home in New Jersey so I basically have some knowledge of crimes and what is needed to be solved. I’m in the process of trying to create a blog because our people need a lot more coverage than what the media is giving us, I reside in New Jersey and want to try to get the word out to as many people I know, I am constantly tweeting Phylicia case and many other case’s. I pray that you get closure soon..

  6. Fancy says:

When my father died tragically I went to the medical examiners office requesting to see him, and I asked for his autopsy report. I contacted the police department in writing that I wanted the report of what had happened and also the prosecutors office, they gave me everthing, including witnesses. I couldn’t rest at all until I got to the bottom of his death, he was working on his car and the jack gave away and crushed his chest, but it didn’t sound right to me because he always worked on his vehicles this happened in Oct.2005 and I still can’t understand. The point im making is Mrs.Sallis-Mustafa you do what needs to be done. Keep a active voice we have ur back. Stay strong!

  7. Harry watson says:

Wow I do’nt beleive this person calling themself Mrs.Janice Sallis is really The Mrs.Sallis that I know and hold respect for.And I say that with respect to Phylicia mother.I can’t picture her holding ill feeling for a person who everyday since Phylicia went missing and i did not slip a day has done something that told someone that Phylicia’s parents still need answers and support of the public. It did’nt matter what the weather was this winter I was out there on the corners sometime stand in the middle of traffic, walking in the woods, going through old abandon houses searching for this child.Never did I give up on her family. And even today I have no plan of ever giving up on justice.I will never try to change Phylicia’s mother thoughts about me.I am very confortible where I am.it is just very disappointing to me to come across her saying something negitive and misleading about the WATSON household.I’m not going try guess why this was said.life can something get the best of people especially a mother who has lost a child.I’m so happy my children are adult and seen just what other along with us can go though. we will bounch back and it will not cloud our judgement as we continue to seek justice for Phylicia.I just find it very hard for either of phylicia parent to think I would do all this to cover a lie for someone that murder they child.I could have just set at home and just kept quiet just like hundrens of her other family members. It make no sense why would Phylicia mother after 10 months say she beleive I know more than Law enforcement. And why do I think if I quit this case will go cold here in Baltimore.I just wonder if people know i told Phylicia’s story to thousand of people in Washington, DC Two weeks ago and collected more than 400 signature on paper petition and came home and key punch all 400 signature myself one letter at time.I’m not the one who comes to the social network and talk a bunch of junk then go watch some tv.I really was out trying. I’m not trying to blow smoke on myself I just trying to understand what the hell is going on.Here I am think i’m helping my family and all the time people are working against me.no wonder this case have’nt been solved.I want better support from this family I want everyone that say the want justice to start screaming a little harder. You all say you care then why do’nt I see you on the streets talking to the people.A many of cases about young black go unsolved each year, I do’nt want Phylica to be one.But Janice Sallis is this childs mother and I need to respect that.If she can’t see me as person that truly care and will never look away then she need to call and tell me stand down because she does’nt trust me or the people in my household.I need only to know one thing why would someone think that my two professional daughter would be in the company of a sixteen year old child partying.I do’nt know what type of people you all my be but i know what type of people we in my house are. Both of my girls are ADULTS.one is a Ward Master for Soldiers injuried in war and has served two tours in Iraq the other is a teacher at the school of performing art here in Baltimore. Both are Professional roller Derby girl two of a handful here in the United State.I REALLY DO’NT SEE THEM PARTYING WITH A CHILD ON A WEEKDAY OR ANYTIME.I know my house.Who ever said this should apolize to my family you do not know us and should stay clear of this type slander.I would love to speak with any of Phylicia family to help them understand better why I do the things i do and why some may veiw me as a threat. When justice come knocking everyone that had a hand in the murder of Phylicia S.Barnes will face punishment, I do not care who there are.Everyone needs real support.

    • IT GETS WORSE & WORSE EVERYDAY says:

HARRY STOP BEING SO FUCKING DEFENSIVE! IT DOESN’T MATTER WHETHER YOUR DAUGHTERS ARE PROFESSIONALS/MED STUDENTS/ THE PRESIDENT OF THE WHITE HOUSE, IF IT SOUNDS LIKE A DUCK AND IT LOOKS LIKE A DUCK, CHANCES ARE . . . IT IS A DUCK! WHETHER OR NOT YOUR DAUGHTERS WAS THE AT THE PARTY IS FUCKING IRRELEVANT TO THE CASE BEING SOLVED, BUT AS A PARENT, YOU CAN NEVER KNOW AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT WHERE OR WHAT YOUR CHILD/CHILDREN ARE DOING, ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE GROWN, AND ESPECIALLY IF IT’S THERE COUSINS, REGARDLESS TO WHAT THEY TELL YOU. IT’S NOT PERSONAL, SHE JUST STATED A FACT, IF YOU WASN’T THERE AND YOU DIDN’T SEE IT, DON’T SPEAK ON IT OR DENY IT, SOMEBODY MUST HAVE SEEN THEM THERE FOR THEM TO BE INCLUDED. NOT TRYING TO SOUND SO NEGATIVE BUT YOU JUST PISSED ME THE FUCK OFF, THAT DOESN’T MEAN YOUR DAUGHTERS ARE INVOLVED BECAUSE THEY ARE THESE, WHO CARES WHO/WHAT THEY ARE, IF THEIR PRESENCE WAS THERE IT WAS . . . UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH

  8. bemoregirl says:

My apologies Ms. Janice from the bottom of my heart and the hearts of all of us in Baltimore that carried Phylicia in our hearts from the first time that we saw her pretty face on the news. The heathens here in Baltimore that are responsible for this will be brought to justice. If they are family members shame on them and they will pay deeply. i never believed any of them. The truth will come to life.It always does. You take care of yourself and know that your baby is fine with the Lord. Its hard I know but your baby would want you to try to go on. Dont rush it though. Take your time and grieve. She is always in your heart and NOONE can take her from your heart. Just take one day at a time. Stay in contact with investigators and stay on your knees. We are all praying for you daily. Im sure its a very long grieving process God Bless You dear.

  9. Follower says:

Harry, you stated “No wonder this case haven’t been solved; people are working against you.” What did you mean by that statement? LOL, who sees you as a threat, you are very funny? You walked the streets, you talked to strangers, and you even distributed flyers, but; I believe you’re talking to the wrong people, the animals are closer than you want to believe, talk to them and you know who they are, just like we know who they are. How long will you go on talking about your two perfect daughters who does nothing but go to work and sleep, blah, blah, blah, okay we get it; they’re wonderful. Just stop it Harry and reach out to your people who are involved; and you don’t have to wonder why this case hasn’t been solved. It has nothing to do with you Harry, get off that peddle stool.

  10. Janice M. Sallis-Mustafa says:

I agree, harry i never accused you or your “perfect” family of anything. maybe that’s what you and ur uncle Simone’s sperm donor want to believe, but that choice is all urs. I really don’t care about what you thiink i said or feel, perhaps you don’t realize i have a much bigger fish to fry. And maybe the case hasn’t been solved yet because a lot of ur relatives are lying and covering up their devious work of murder and contributing drugs and alcohol to a minor and corrupted my daughter whom i put expensive hard work and effort into. It ain’t about the Watsons family, perhaps you don’t and/or can’t imagine the hurt of a loving parent who cares about her offsprings and until you can walk an inch in my shoes than maybe we can have a mature adult to adult discussion on pain and despair and trusting of so called family. Until you hear it from me nothing else seems to matter to me and ur disilllusional accusations.

DON’T WORRY MRS. JANICE, HE KNOWS THAT THE BARNES IN MARYLAND ARE GUILTY OF CONTRIBUTING AND POSSIBLY PLAYING A PART IN YOUR DAUGHTER’S DEATH, DEFINITELY HINDERING & DELAYING AN INVESTIGATION. IT’S ONLY OBVIOUS, BUT THE TRUTH WILL COME OUT . . . WHATS DONE IN THE DARK EVENTUALLY COMES TO THE LIGHT AND ALL OF THEIR ASSES WILL BE BROUGHT TO THE LIGHT.

  11. annakenc says:

i think this man harry has his hands full…and i wish him luck in his efforts. what an undertaking, considering that perhaps some of his family are involved…cut the man some slack. all he’s trying to say is that his devotion to finding out the truth is proof that he really does care. and he should get credit for that. i have seen people sit around practically an entire lifetime-doing absolutely nothing…but you know what 0eat sleep s–t
these social deviants today who engage in this type of “home entertainment” have a problem…the home is to be a sanctuary from the world and it’s entrapments-i am very sorry that these young people are led to danger right in the midst of the home dwelling. for that reason alone the residents of the home should be liable for this girl going missing.
blessings to all who grieve, and all the dear children, and their mothers
