Phylicia Barnes Mother Speaks Out On My Blog: Says Teen’s Dad Is Involved In Child’s Ending

After months of searching for her, the discovery of her tragic ending, the bombshell media reports that young Phylicia Barnes may have been a victim of some sick twisted Child Pornography Ring has not been sufficient enough to bring justice and closure to her mother Janice Sallis-Mustafa, and it now appears that the murder case of this beautiful bright child has gone ice cold. I along with other Bloggers have relentlessly made diligent efforts to keep this case alive in Mainstream Social Media. The authorities remain tight lipped about details, if any, indicating a lead into who may have been responsible for Phylicia’s untimely demise. It seems like an eternity as followers of this horrible story remain watchful while intensely awaiting a break in the case. Many theories have surfaced surrounding what may have happened to Phylicia and some facts may not be accurate, but there has been a consistent perspective by a growing number of people who believe that the teen’s siblings have more knowledge than what they have revealed regarding what happened on the day that their Baby Sister went missing.

Blog posters have indicated their immediate suspicion upon Phylicia’s older sister Deena Barnes after listening to an interview of all three Barnes Siblings during a “Peas In Their Pods” radio broadcast on Blogtalk. Her account was  troubling, the whispering, the lack of authentic grief, her suspicious early departure during the interview outraged most, and raised a red flag in the minds of many from the onset of Phylicia’s disappearance. Although media reports have pointed to a strained relationship between the Barnes and Mustafa families, which indicated Janice Sallis’s complete displeasure with the kinds of things Phylicia was exposed too under Deena Barnes supervision during her visit to Baltimore, Ms. Sallis made it known to readers of this Blog that there is no doubt in her mind that the Barnes Family were involved in Phylicia’s murder. In one blog post Ms Sallis blasted Deena Barnes stating, “They ought to come to reality and know that it’s the right thing for her to be accountable for her demonic actions and spend the rest of her useless life in a cage where animals need to be until the day of her demize”. These harsh words for Deena Barnes appear warranted given the pathetic circumstances of the case. On the day that Phylicia went missing Deena did not notify Janice that her daughter may be in trouble, a point that upset other mothers following this case, and a major violation of a “silent code” that women honor and revere related to their children. Not just that though, one blog poster struggled with the seemingly synthetic Memorial held outside of Deena Barne’s apartment in honor of Phylicia’s tragedy, and Ms Sallis also concurred with that sentiment by stating, “I as Phylicia’s mom did not honor that memorial service nor give my condolences to their deceitful and betrayed actions. My thoughts as from the beginning that the
bmore memorial was just another one of the barnes’ detour to mislead the public as if they were really mourning”. Just like that blog poster’s comments indicated, I had extreme difficulty watching Deena, the other siblings, and dad Russel Barnes give interviews with obvious apathy and insincere grief. In cases like this one must siege objectivity even though the actions of the child’s father side of the family appear sickening and deplorable. This is a difficult task in the face of such a gut wrenching story, bu as one blog poster indicated: “I just viewed the memorial service that took place in Baltimore. I can’t help but wonder why releasing a dove is funny to Kelly Barnes and the father and brother are able to conduct the interview with out breaking down, to die so tragically I just don’t see too much mourning but then again its not like they have been each others lives for long so maybe its just doesnt phase them.. Please correct me if I’m wrong”. Again, it’s obvious that the poster’s sentiments mirror Phylicia’s mother as she rebutted, “No (poster’s user name) you aren’t wrong ur right on target. The Barnes’ are church going perpetrators and my Father GOD will deal with every one of them on HIS time and terms”.  The suspicion of the Barnes Family involvement in Phylicia’s murder has been so strongly held by Janice Sallis, that she admits purposely failing to disclose Homegoing Arrangements with them: “I as Phylicia’s mother, deliberately told the Barnes’ family at a spare of the moment so that they wouldn’t get prepared to come to my baby’s homegoing celebration when I strongly feel as though that they’ve taken a huge part of my Father GOD accepting her and not taking her. I just didn’t have the patience nor the tolerance to see those fake broads participating at my daughter’s celebration”. Janice’s comments also appeared to indicate that Kelly as well as Deena may have been just as culpable in Phylicia’s murder while dismissing them both as “fake broads”.  I personally understand Janice’s feeling regarding Kelly Barnes. I became disturbed after learning during the Blogtalk Interview that Kelly didn’t go by Deen’as apartment to pick Phylicia up as planed to go shopping, and to a hair appointment. I have continuously stated my concerns related to this fact along with the strange lapse in time when there was no communication from the sisters with Phylicia, even after failed attempts to contact her. I have always felt that the older Barnes Females already knew that Phylicia was deceased, thus explaining the mysterious lapse in time. It may come as a surprise to some, not to me however, that Janice Sallis openly admitted she believes that Russel Barnes, Phylicia’s father was also involved: “I’m sorry I don’t agree, I believe Russell’s hands were in the clay to her demize as well. If a so called dad doesn’t care if his child exists or not that behavior of uncaring and cold heartedness definitely doesn’t exclude the bank of sperm out”. Though Janice isn’t explicit in her revelation regarding Russel Barnes, a careful analysis of the manner in which she phrased her comment, indicates the “sperm bank” remark displays that his “uncaring” and “cold heartedness” clearly shows he is  detached emotionally from his own daughter. Janice says that “Russel also had his hand in the clay”. Could the term “clay” mean that Janice suspects that Russel was directly involved in disposing of Phylicia’s body in the Susquehanna River? Well, while following up on the case, I recall some blog posters stating the child’s father actually spearheaded the conspiracy to cover up the murder. I won’t delve too much in that, but I believe there may be some credibility to the Russel Barnes involvement perspective. When media reports first broke about Phylicia possibly falling prey to a Child Porn Ring, we learned that the F.B.I had obtained search warrants for four Baltimore men. We now know the identity of  three of them who are Micheal Johnson(Deena’s so called ex Boyfriend), his younger Cousin “Bootz”, and his 16 year old minor Brother all of whom were at Deena’s apartment during the early hours of the day Phylicia went missing. However, we are unaware of who the fourth person that was indicated within the sealed Federal Search Warrant, and I can’t help but wonder if that person is in fact Russel Barnes. Who ever the individual(s) are responsible for this child’s death, it increasingly and convincingly appears, had some knowledge of the inner workings with Baltimore Police, and more in particular must have had experience as a subject of a criminal investigation. In my mind, the circus that led Authorities on a wild goose chase during the initial search for Phylicia, was  a clever tactic invented to mislead Police, and to enable her body adequate time to decompose and lose potential forensic evidence. Moreover, Deena’s failure to contact Janice Sallis when Phylicia went missing is troubling and suspicious. It is also logical considering her potential involvement in the murder, but if Deena didn’t make that call, why did Russel also not call. This to is also very troubling and should heighten his potential culpability in the murder of his own daughter. To Janice Sallis I extend my continued heartfelt condolences and remain committed to keeping Phylicia’s story alive until decisive justice has been rendered related to the tragic ending of her beautiful and loving daughter. God speed!

Mr. Adams Can you contact me also on the email above..

    Thank you

  2. Vanessa says:

I have been praying faithful for closure for Ms. Sallis and the entire family. I did attend the memorial at Reistertown Square and I must say it was just for show. They did alot of talking amongest themselves and laughing, no one and I repeat no one sheaded a tear. I agree they are all behind this and I await the arrest of these sick demons.

  3. B more Mom says:

This story has really gripped my heart as a mother of girls raised in B more!!! That’s why I sent the donation and signed the petition stating I side with Janice on this case. My ex and I have fueded over step kids and that is why I understand Janice now regretting letting her daughter come to B more. Russell Barnes reminds me of my ex (not in looks) but in behavior because I can see him refusing to believe a child of his would dump another in a river NUDE! My daughters think Phylicia got in way over her head and the hood rats (Deena, MJ, etc.) dumped her body rather than face Janice (who is a hurricane and they knew it!) putting all of them in jail for the rest of their lives!!!! Saving their own a@ is more important than how Phylicia’s death would affect others!!! See as I posted on AOL (responding to person I think involved) I was raised in the hood (St. Louis/E. St. Louis) and we wouldn’t let a “naive” sibling with a promising future indulge in drugs etc. I can hear me saying now “H@ no I don’t want to hear Janice’s mouth if she finds out. You’re going home NOW!” Even in “Akeelah and the Bee” the thugs took care of promising intelligent kids! I’m still wondering why Phylicia chose Towson U……ummmm!!! This is no reflection on Towson U just to say I think choice from this “honor student’ was to dodge Janice keeping tabs on unhealthy TEEN behavior although a friend did wonder why not Morgan, UMBC, UMES, or U of MD etc.!!!

God brought Phylicia up to let the guilty know to start sweating because it will never be over until THEY rot in jail. See what Deena fails to realize is if B more was such a dangerous place (as the hood rats hope everyone would believe) she would have turned up DEAD before Phylicia in that drug infested apt. That’s why I believe it was an inside job targetted at hiding Phylicia’s body and evidence. I’m still torn if it was a drug accident that went bad or on purpose by MJ (police know how she died so they can pin point motive). Either way the way Phylicia was disposed tells me all involved had no regards for Phylicia and her family in NC. Deena dear, not making that call to Janice is what will haunt you for the rest of your life because we know if Kelly were missing I bet Russell would have been called ASAP!!! I do believe Deena’s hatred of Janice clouded her judgement dealing with Phylicia (dead and alive!) I believe in karma so the murderers aren’t sleeping well………

Janice hard to criticize anything you say or do when if it were one of my daughters found floating in a river nude my first stop would be a personal meeting with Gov O’Malley reminding him how he knows my family and I want this case SOLVED because he has daughters as well!!!! RIP Angel……

    • Janice Sallis-Mustafa says:

Dear Bmore Mom, although P.Simone had chosed Towson I wasn’t going to let her go I just didn’t want to burst her bubble duriing the time of her wait of acceptance from Towson University. She was either going to attend a college in North Carolina or in Georgia where I had at the time my ex husband (Raheem Mustafa) resided in Georgia and raised her since she was just 3 yrs old. He taught her how to ride a bike, he taught her how to put worms (etc.) on a fishing rod to teach her how to fish he gave her her first experience of driving a vehicle he loved and still does loves her unconditionally and has multiple break downs about P.Simone’s untimely demize. My reason for protesting her attending Towson was strictly because I didn’t want her to lose focus on what was important to her her future.

    • Janice Sallis-Mustafa says:

I truly thank you Bmore Mom for ur contributions, prayers, understanding last but not least I thank also for taking the time to comment ur concerns.

  4. Van Helsing says:

I’m so glad that Janice has spoken out! So many of us have prayed and waited for her to give Phylicia a voice in the obvious propaganda machine that is the barnes “family” spin.

Even more telling is that fact that she is pleased with the progress of the investigation.

Hmm, I wonder why there are those, *cough* the barnes’ *cough*, who would say that they’re not being informed and have even created a petition to demand an update/arrest.

Of course we know who they want arrested, me thinks that Johnson won’t be the only one charged with this heinous crime-not by a long shot.

How can these folks possibly believe that they have the public or law enforcement fooled? They’re about as subtle and convincing as a wolf in wolf’s clothing.

Dear Ms. Janice Sallis-Mustafa, you have the heartfelt condolences, prayers, encouragement, cheers, hugs, and championing from thousands upon thousands of people.

Stank-a-danks in bmore-your time is running out! Be not deceived, there are NO Casey Anthony chess moves that you can make. Convictions will be doled out and will STICK!

    RIP Phylicia Simone

    • Janice Sallis-Mustafa says:

dear dbrianadams i as P. Simone’s mom i really appreciate ur deepest concerns and many prayers to my awesome GOD.

      • Ms Sallis what happened to Phylicia should be of tremendous concern to us all. The senseless sickening actions of individuals many have suspected from the gate, should be met with swift and relentless Justice. It’s very interesting that it has been revealed of potential Police Affiliation with Mr Johnson, I said this after having viewed the Myspace Pages, Yahoo, and other Social Media postings of all three of these males listed in the Federal Search Warrant. The kinds of things that they are into (guns, rap, etc.) in my mind clearly demonstrates their inability to commit such a heinous act and successfully derail Police investigative efforts for such a lengthy duration. I even mentioned this in this Blog Post. I have no doubt that the perpetrators had some expert assistance in covering up this tragic horror. Also, a Poster here (Ericka) is a co-worker of Kelly Barnes and has emphaticly insisted that Kelly did not come to work the day young Phylicia went missing. I directed her to the Blog Talk Interview where Kelly clearly said she was schedule to get off work early that day (12-12:30 p.m.). If Kelly did not go to work that day, it is extremely problematic giving light to such a contradiction she made publicly during the “Peas In Their Pods” Broadcast. She needs to be pressed further on this topic. Every minor inconsistency must be highly scrutinized with her siblings at this juncture of the case.

  5. Hi David,
In the above article you wrote Two Peas in a Pod. The correct name is Peas In Their Pods. Thanks
    Sherry

  6. B more Mom says:

A friend said something interesting because we LOVE watching The Closer. He said Brenda would have found a way to haul Deena, MJ, brother, cousin etc. in with a lesser charge (Phylicia was underage!!!) threatening them until “a loose lip sunk this ship!” Wow if only real life cases could be solved in 60Ms!!! I want police to take its time and close all loopholes because I have a feeling the end result of this case will be copied on plenty of shows!!!! Can’t you just hear Nancy Grace now “Ex boyfriend (who will take down Deena!!!), brother and cousin have been arrested in the death of NC honor student Phylicia Barnes found floating in a river in MD! Unleash the lawyers!!!!”

  7. Ericka says:

Why did Kelly pick Phylicia up that day? Her job says that she was off?

  8. Ericka says:

Why didn’t Kelly pick Phylicia up that day? I work with her and she wasn’t at work that day, and everyone at works knows she was off but everyone THINKS she was at work that day, SHE WASN’T!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO WHY DIDN’T SHE GO TO PICK PHYLICIA UP WHEN SHE TOLD HER SISTER SHE WOULD!

    • dbrianadams says:

Ericka if my memory serves me correctly, Kelly Barnes stated during the “Peas In Their Pods” online Broadcast on Blogtalk that she was scheduled to get off from work that day around 12-12:30 p.m. Kelly also said she contacted Phylicia unsuccessfully, and then she contacted Deena Barnes, who told kelly that Micheal Johnson had told her previously that Phylicia was on the couch asleep. Kelly then says we decided to just let her sleep. I have had trouble with the sisters account of this since I heard the Broadcast. You can listen to it here. http://www.blogtalkradio.com/peasintheirpods/2011/01/19/phylicia-barnes

      • Ericka says:

How can you get off between 12 – 12:30 when you weren’t even at work? Nothing clicked that Michael said she was sleep. That was still more reason to go since that’s why you going the first place because he was there. Thanks for the link. smdh

    • Janice Sallis-Mustafa says:

another one of their cover ups, don’t forget they are close to some police(s), therefore they could have been instructed and guided to what to do. As I say and wil continue to say my GOD is in control of it all. And I pity the (fools) whom call themselves officer to serve and protect that’s a Ha Ha………………………………without having to say anymore.

  9. B more Mom says:

Oh believe me posters my daughters and I have discussed that element of this case to death because we travel A LOT with a child in college in another state and we have had times when we were supposed to meet. Guess what…when I called her cell and if she had fallen asleep waiting on me SHE ANSWERED (and vice versus)…if she didn’t WE GOT OVER THERE AND CHECKED ON HER so I’m not buying the bullsh@ excuse “I let her sleep!” And after Phylicia went missing I really clamped down on my college daughter living alone in an apt so something smells fishy in this case big time!!! I still wish Phylicia had alerted her mom to what was going on in that apartment but if Janice is as strict as I am my daughters try to handle situations on their own before I get involved as well because they know I rain h@!!!

Phylicia, I am so sorry your mother has to deal with this kind of pain (my mom, a nurse like Janice, tragically lost my teen sister). In 2011 Janice should have been celebraitng you starting college like I celebrated a college graduation. B more might not be perfect but throwing promising young ladies in a river to rot is not the norm. As I said I raised two daughters in this city so police PLEASE solve this case for the Sallis/Barnes families!!!! The murderers didn’t expect this kind of support for Janice……..

    • Ericka says:

Well said B more Mom! I feel you on that! Sleep, he’s there, wake her up and put her on the phone. Maybe Kelly did not like NOT being the baby of the family anymore. Jealously is a bitch!

    • Janice Sallis-Mustafa says:

B more Mom I can’t agree with you more. P. Simone knew if she would’ve told me anythng out of the norm I would’ve dropped everything that was suppose to be important and picked her up faster than asap.

  10. Ladybug says:

The petition was not created by the Barnes family. It was created by a concerned Maryland resident who has a background in criminal justice. The intention of the petition is to keep Phylicia’s case in the media, seek Justice for Phylicia and to help put the guilty behind bars.

  11. Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? says:

Next update will probably be Deena and Kelly Barnes getting representation from a lawyer since their lies are starting to unravel. All who supposedly had last contact with Phylicia need to take lie detector tests and be interrogated from sun up to sun down! They need to play one against the other! I read somewhere that Michael has a relative working for the Baltimore police department I can’t help but wonder if there is some sort of corruption going on. Money Talks. I’m so happy the FBI and state police has taken over. The facts will reveal how disgusting, sick and downright shameful this case is. Justice will be served for Phylicia.

  12. Van Helsing says:

    Mr. Adams-

Surely ladybug is referring to my mention of the petition, which indeed may have been the well-meaning intention of a barnes supporter. Yet, it is a curiosity.

I have screen shots of suggestions for signers of it to use fictitious names, just to add a volume of names. This is a perversion that does NOT help Phylicia’s cause, but is a manifestation of self-serving manipulators.

Law enforcement is not fooled and there WILL be Justice for sweet Phylicia and her true, loving, family/loved ones.

Truth is not borne of lies, Truth overcomes lies. The fact that people are being/have been prompted sign with fake names is NOT RIGHT.

The outrage over Phylicia’s murder is real and palpable enough to warrant and receive GENUINE support via any official presentation with her name attached.

I won’t respond to any other baiting tactics about the petition, so please feel free to chastise, huff, and puff, ad nauseum without me.

    I’m patiently waiting on arrestS…

    RIP Phylicia Simone

    • Ladybug says:

I agree with you about people using fake names. I thought they were just afraid to sign their real names on the petition. Please understand that I am not trying to bait you to sign the petition. I am a Maryland resident who spent countless hours searching for Phylicia. I did not know her or her family personally when I heard that she was missing. My mother lives in the area where her sister’s apartment was.

  13. bemoregirl says:

I keep hearing rumors about Kelly being pregnant. Who is her boyfriend? Has he been questioned?

  14. bemoregirl says:

My sincere condolences to Ms.Sallis. I have been consumed with this case since I saw Phylicia’s face on the evening news in December 2010. People go missing quite often but I knew that something was different about this case. When she was finally found, I was devastated as if I had known her and her mom all of my life. My heart still aches for her mom. I cant imagine the pain associated with this tragedy.I pray for comfort for her mom and her sisters daily, (not the Baltimore sisters) I mean her real sisters. These so-called relatives of hers in Baltimore are a disgrace to Baltimore. I was suspicious of everyone of them since seeing them on TV. I saw no feeling, no hurt, no real tears. I was more devastated than any of them and I never met Phylicia. I could go on and on but I just want her mom to know that we do care in baltimore and we are praying for justice.

    • Janice Sallis-Mustafa says:

bemoregirl I truly thank you you are an angel

      • alester1 says:

        Greetings Ms. Sallis-Mustafa,

I have been following this case from the first moment I saw Phylicia’s face with her beautiful smile on the news one evening. I knew from that moment something really terrible happened to her because I could see it in her face that she seemed to be a well-adjusted kid who seemed loved and valued.

I am so sorry for your loss which is everyone’s loss really because our world has lost the potential of a bright shining star in Phylicia. I was devastated watching the live streaming of her funeral in May.

I have attempted to keep an open mind regarding possible suspects regarding Phylicia’s demise because I don’t see the evidence the police are looking at. I will say that certain people and their actions seem suspect.

I have been prayerful about a resolution that will bring justice in memory of Phylicia and to her family. Everyday I look Baltimore Sun thinking this is the day. I am not from Baltimore but near your neck of the woods.

With all due respect and knowing you are limited by what you can say, are there any indications that justice will prevail in this case?

I wish you all the best during what I know has been a very painful time in your life. One that I don’t think anyone who hasn’t been through this type of trauma can appreciate.

        God-speed,
        Angel

  15. Butterflygal says:

What I would like to know! Did Ms. Sallis ever go to Bailtmore to see the area or environment where Phylicia was staying and observe the father side of the family, since Phylicia and her haven’t heard from that side of the family in 8 years. Did she just let Phylicia go, and take the good words of Deena. Had she ever sit down and talked to Deena and Kelly face to face?
Did Phylicia Barnes know the family secret? And why was she allowed go visit after something like that has been told to Deena, not knowing how Deena and her family would react to such a big secret?
Why did Phylicia not get on that flight back to NC on Monday 27th? Was this reported to the police? Why did she call her sister in NC, when she was supposed to back home?
Did the family in NC call Deena, after they tried to call Phylicia phone after Christmas and Monday when she didn’t get on that flight? Why did it take so long?????? But, what I don’t understand why didn’t any of her family members call Baltimore police when they couldn’t reach her. If they couldn’t reach her the police would have been there best choice!

hi buttterflygal you brought up a lot of good questions and yes i met deena and kelly when they came to N.C. during the time they asked if phylicia could go to their family reunion and deena kelly and i had a long discussion and to answer were other ?, deena had moved from the area that she lived in before and not inform me and yes i did take deena’s word that she abides by my rules and respect my parenting rules and regulations. to be honest with you butterflygal by deena being 28 yrs old i truly thought that she was much more responsible especially when she told me that she’s a pharmacy tech, works for kaiser permenete part time a nusrsing student and with all those credentials i presumed my baby girl would be around a decent influence. and if the police were called earlier they would not have done anything about it took them FIVE whole days to take my daughter’s missing serious;therefore, a lot of cleaning up evidence could and/or didd take place. i hope that i answered most of ur concerns.

Thank you Ms. Sallis for your response! I have followed Phylicia case since day one. Myself as a mother of now, an 18 year old daughter, wouldn’t let my daughter go around her father and her half siblings due to the fact that she didn’t come up around them and he had stay away, and I felt my daughter upbring was way better, with a beautiful step-father who had values . My daughter is a bright and smart young lady and her half siblings are nothing but thugs. So when my daughter was 14 and ask me if she could see her father I said NO! he hasn’t done anything for you! You may see him when your an adult, but not on my and your step father clock! And you know what Ms. Sallis, I don’t regret making that joice for her. She lived with that and is doing fine in college. Her career path to become a first grade teacher.

I pray everyday that Allah will find justice for Phylicia and your family very soon! I will follow this case to the end, but I will never forget what happened to this young lady. So sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
